The city of North Charleston is a port city located near South Carolina’s coast. It’s one of the largest cities in South Carolina and the top retail city in the state. Recently, this vibrant community has seen a surging real estate market, population growth pressures, and the need for improved transportation infrastructure as this city transforms.
North Charleston is currently confronted with freight transportation challenges. The community has identified opportunities to improve railroad crossing safety, affordable housing, health outcomes, and community connectivity to develop relationships with community organizations.
Specifically, The Ray and its partners helped to advance opportunities for increased safety for the community. The city of North Charleston won a $940k Railroad Crossing Elimination grant. The funds will be used for the construction of a railroad overpass at the intersection of Rivers and Durant Avenues.
