Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and is located along the Alabama River. The City has a population of around 200,000 people. Montgomery has served as a focal point for Civil Rights events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery March and has been home to several influential Civil Rights leaders; however, the minority and low-income communities have met many challenges.

Montgomery is part of Montgomery County and lies in the state’s center. Several major thoroughfares service the city. Interstates I-65 and I-85 intersect in the city, and U.S. Routes 31, 80, 82, 231, and 331 are also located within the city boundaries.

One of Montgomery’s main goals is to enhance departmental coordination to improve grant capacity and funding in the community. Working with The Ray and its capacity-building partners, Montgomery sought to improve transit options and was awarded $16 million for electric buses and charging equipment, providing a more efficient public transportation system.
