Brownsville is located on the southern edge of Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border. Brownsville is a low-income community with approximately 189,000 residents and a majority Hispanic population. Brownsville is known for its cultural diversity, which is largely influenced by its proximity to the Mexican border.
With four international border crossings, the city of Brownsville is responsible for nearly $1.5 billion in global trade. In 2022, 337,700 trucks and 825 trains crossed into this border community. The city faces challenges with unemployment, health, and poverty, but it remains proud of its culture, which prioritizes community and inclusivity.
With support from The Ray and other capacity-building partners, Brownsville is working on community mobility improvements, including sidewalks, affordable housing, environmental justice, and economic issues to create wealth-building opportunities.
